Why Leadwell 360

While I worked as a writer and graphics designer for many years prior, my experience in program development began in 2004 working for an organization that provides addiction treatment and counseling services. I was hired to help build the agency’s first marketing and fundraising program.

My first assignment was to create a fundraising and awareness event. So, I decided to create an annual walk. I designed an event plan, a brochure and event sponsorship package. I solicited media coverage. I found volunteers and twisted the arms of staff to help man water stations.

While the walk was a marginal success, something was definitely missing. I planned. I executed. So, what was it?

Short story – I planned and executed the event without proper perspective. In other words, without fully considering how the agency’s history, its market position or its capacity for support could impact success. It’s true – I worked hard to engage staff and the general public, but I failed to include those who would benefit from the event the most – the program participants.

So, why Leadwell 360? Over the years I’ve learned the hard way that building highly successful strategies, programs or projects means developing the ability to lead from a 360-degree perspective.

Success – not marginal success, but real success – takes studying and evaluating every aspect of your business, program or project from the point of view of your customers, participants, staff, market, competitors and general public. It takes examining your financial position, profit margins and capacity for accomplishing your goals.

You must understand your company’s reputation in the community and do your best to ensure it is consistent with your company’s mission, vision and values. Remember that you will face opposition from your competitors, especially if you are a new business, so make it a point to be aware of their market position and be able to articulate what makes your program or product a unique and better choice.
